Cineforum Italiano

Cineforum Italiano provides an opportunity for all Italians and lovers of Italian culture to discover or rediscover a uniquely Italian cinematic view of life. Many Americans are familiar with the legends of Italian cinema, directors like Rossellini, De Sica, and Fellini. Americans know about the great Italian classics like “La Dolce Vita” or “L’Avventura” but what about modern Italian cinema? Right now, there’s a great way for you to bring your knowledge of Italian movies up-to-date at Cineforum Italiano. This initiative is bringing award-winning films made by the modern masters of Italian film to town.

The opening film, My Name is Tanino, is an early work of the young Italian director Paolo Virzì, who is considered to be one of the most talented film directors working in Italy today. This is a coming-of-age film. A young man who has a certain idea of what America is all about meets a young American tourist and decides to come over and visit her. Tanino finds his imagination tested by reality. The protagonists in many of Virzi’s films are young people who are transitioning to adulthood and face choices that will determine their eventual path in life. Many American movies focus on adolescent adults but it’s an age group seldom represented in Italian films. Virzì also focuses on everyday, common people in his films instead of the rich or well-placed and he takes us down side streets that tourists seldom go when visiting Italy.

Cineforum Italiano is dedicated to sharing Italian culture through film with Washington, DC Audiences. Italian films with English subtitles will be screened throughout the year. All films are open to the public. Please visit the website,, for full details, including location, start times, schedule and movie reviews.
