Library
We regret to inform you that, due to construction works in progress, the library of the Italian Cultural Institute in Washington, DC will be closed until further notice. We apologize for any inconvenience.
The library of the Italian Cultural Institute in Washington, DC is intended to provide circulating and reference collections to the general public as well as to students and scholars of the Washington metropolitan area. The collection of the Istituto library contains more 3500 books and over 300 VHS tapes and DVDs.
Acquisitions are made through the purchase of recent publications, the endowment of special releases from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Ministry of Culture, contributions by Publishers, and donations by private citizens.
Reading and Reference Room
The reading and room is open to the public Monday through Friday from 10:00 am 12-noon and from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm. Seating arrangement can accommodate 6 users.
Access to materials and Borrowing privileges
Access to the library for on-site reading of books, newspapers and magazines is free. Borrowing of all materials and on-site viewing of videos is limited to memebrs of the Istituto only. Requests to view or borrow materials must be submitted to the Office Manager or, in her absence, to Mr. Michele Giacalone or Mr. Ferruccio Magatelli. A picture ID is required.
The length of borrowing is two weeks for books and two weeks for videos, renewable one time only. Every effort should be made to return library materials on or before the date due. A $5 fine will be charged for materials returned after the due date. Borrowing privileges may be suspended if fines for overdue materials are not paid.
To renew items, request on-site viewings of videos, cancel holds, and learn what fines are owed, patrons should contact (202) 518-0998 Ext. 23 during regular office hours, or e-mail iicwashington@esteri.it.
How to Locate Materials
Materials may be looked up at the online catalog through the Internet. The online catalog is available 24 hours a day to users on the Internet. Through the online catalog, users can:
- Perform simple and advanced searches (by title, author, etc.)
- View new acquisitions
- Create bibliographic lists and email to an associate
- Access the collection’s statistical data
- Access specific virtual resources available through the Internet.

How to become a member of the Istituto
To become an "Amico dell'Istituto" fill out the membership form and send it with a $50 check payable to the Italian Cultural Institute to:
