SIENA AND THE PALIO IN PIAZZA DEL CAMPO

Author, filmmaker, and organic olive oil producer Dario Castagno has been invitated to be part of the Italian Language Week. He lives in the hilltop hamlet of Vagliagli near Siena, Tuscany. Though pure “Chiantigiano,” Castagno was born in London to Italian parents who were importing fine Italian wines to England. He returned to Tuscany at age 9 and immersed himself in the region’s legends, landscape, and lore, subjects that are the essence of his writing in Too Much Tuscan Sun, A Day in Tuscany and the forthcoming Too Much Tuscan Wine. Prime among the traditions that come alive in his work is the Palio, the legendary horse race that has been run July 2 and august 16 in the Campo in Siena for hundreds of years. Castagno, a proud member of the Bruco (Caterpillar) contrada, says: “the Palio allows you to be transported into the Middle Ages as if you were the lucky passenger of a time machine, and you witness customs and events that have remained untouched for centuries”.
