Methods

The language courses are taught in Italian and follow a communicative approach. While grammar is introduced and learned, the emphasis is mostly on speaking.

Levels

Basic Italian 1
Oggi in Italia textbook, chapters Preliminary-3. The grammatical structures include present tense of regular verbs, articles, nouns, possesive adjectives, and prepositions. Communicative goals include greetings and introducing oneself, and asking for basic information.

Basic Italian 2
Oggi in Italia textbook, chapters 4-6. The grammatical structures include present tense of some irregular verbs and past tense, and adjectives. Communicative goals include describing oneself, talking about likes and dislikes, asking and giving information, using the past tense, and talking about past events.

Basic Italian 3
Oggi in Italia textbook, chapters 7-9. The grammatical structures include reflexive and modal verbs, past imperfetto tense, formal and informal commands, direct objects, and dimostrative adjectives. Communicative goals include talking about ongoing actions and habits in the past, asking and answering questions about food, restaurants, and talking about weather.

Intermediate Italian 1
Oggi in Italia textbook, chapters 10-12. The grammatical structures include imperfetto vs passato prossimo, indirect objects, future tense, trapassato tense, ci adverb and ne pronoun. Communicative goals include talking about the environment, cinema, sport, free time, and asking for information.

Intermediate Italian 2
Oggi in Italia textbook, chapters 13-15. The grammatical structures include conditional tense, double object pronouns, che and cui pronouns, subjunctive present of regular and irregular verbs, and comparative and superlative adjectives. Communicative goals include talking about politics and social and multicultural problems.

Advanced Italian 1
Oggi in Italia textbook, chapters 16-18. Students will review the grammatical structures learned in Basic and Intermediate Italian and will be exposed to more sophisticated constructions. The grammatical structures include subjuntive past, imperfetto, and trapassato, present and past of progressive tenses, and preposition after verbs. Discussion of texts including literary works and magazine and newspaper articles will follow.

Advanced Italian 2
This is an advanced course for students who have reached a high level of proficiency in Italian. This class will meet to read and discuss articles selected by the instructor. Students will have opportunities to apply their knowledge of the Italian language to literature and cultural and social topics.
